Sommaire

1. 2026 World Cup in Mexico: dates, official info and news

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first to be staged in three countries: the United States, Canada and Mexico. It will also be the first edition to welcome 48 national teams, a little far from the previous 32.

The tournament will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with more than 100 matches in 16 host cities across North America.

Mexico will host 13 matches in three major cities: Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.

The opening match will take place at Mexico City‘s famous Estadio Azteca. The stadium will thus become the first in the world to host an opening match for the third time, after 1970 and 1986!

2. Which cities in Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup?

Three major Mexican cities will host matches during the 2026 World Cup: Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.

All three have modern stadiums, suitable infrastructures and many attractions to discover during your stay.

2.1 Mexico City

Mexico City is where the opening match of the 2026 World Cup will be played, in the mythical Azteca stadium in the south of the city.

While we’re in Mexico City, we might as well take the opportunity to discover the best this great city has to offer! Right?

Among the classics: a visit to Xochimilco and the Frida Kahlo Museum, ideal for exploring the south of the city in a colorful atmosphere. You can also visit the National Anthropology Museum and Chapultepec Castle, two must-sees located in the large urban park of the same name.

As for gastronomy, I recommend this gourmet tour of the city center to discover the authentic flavors of Mexican street food.

Looking for a truly local experience? Attend a lucha libre show with tacos, beer and mezcal included.

And if you’ve got half a day to spare, don’t miss the excursion to Teotihuacan with an archaeologist to explore the famous pyramids before the crowds arrive.

2.2 Guadalajara

Capital of the state of Jalisco, Guadalajara embodies the traditional charm of Mexico, with its mariachis and tequila.

Before or after a match, you can discover the historic monuments of the center with a guided walking tour, ideal for understanding local architecture and the city’s history.

Don’t miss Tlaquepaque, a neighborhood full of color and artisans, perfect for strolling, eating local food or listening to live mariachi bands.

Guadalajara is also the starting point for the best excursions to the city of Tequila, with its agave fields and traditional distilleries. An experience not to be missed, tastings included.

And if you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, consider this tour around the charro and the charreada, an equestrian tradition still alive and well in the region.

2.3 Monterrey

Located in northern Mexico, Monterrey is a modern, dynamic city surrounded by mountains.

Although Monterrey is less touristy than some of our other host cities, it’s well worth a visit. You can visit the downtown area, discover the redeveloped industrial district of Fundidora, or enjoy a good plate of grilled meat, a local specialty.

And if you’re a nature lover, the region offers a number of impressive field trips. You can discover the García caves and the Sierra del Fraile by cable car, an easy and spectacular walk in the mountains near town.

For the sporty-ones, a hike with rappel at El Nido de los Aguiluchos offers a real adventure in the heart of nature.

And if you prefer something more accessible, you can also opt for a guided tour of the Cola de Caballo waterfalls, transfer included.

3. The stadiums for the 2026 World Cup in Mexico

Three stadiums have been selected in Mexico to host matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Each is located in a large, well-connected city with a genuine soccer culture and modern infrastructure:

3.1 Estadio Azteca – Mexico City

It’s here, in one of the world’s most legendary stadiums, where the opening match will be played. The Estadio Azteca has already made soccer history with the 1970 and 1986 World Cups.

It can accommodate over 80,000 spectators and is currently undergoing major renovations.

It’s in the south of Mexico City, and easy to get to by public transport. Atmosphere guaranteed!

5. Where to stay during the World Cup in Mexico?

With millions of visitors expected, the 2026 World Cup will create a huge demand for accommodation in all the host cities.

I recommend that you book as early as possible, especially if you want accommodation in a good location at a reasonable price. Traffic is likely to be heavy on match days, so choosing the right neighborhood can make all the difference.

In Mexico City, if you want to be close to the Azteca stadium, I recommend you stay in Coyoacán: a pleasant, quieter neighborhood, and above all, more convenient for getting to the stadium, especially with the expected traffic jams.

If you prefer to stay in a more central area that’s pleasant to visit, safe and well-connected, choose Condesa, Roma or Juárez.

In Guadalajara, the Akron stadium is located in the Zapopan district. Staying there can be a good option if you want to avoid long commutes on match days.

Otherwise, for a more pleasant stay, I recommend Colonia Americana, a lively district with cafés, bars and restaurants, or the historic center, well placed for exploring the city.

In Monterrey, the San Pedro Garza García district is known for its high-end hotels and shopping malls.

Downtown Monterrey, on the other hand, offers more affordable, well-placed options. That said, due to the often heavy traffic, I recommend that you look for accommodation close to the BBVA stadium.

6. How to buy tickets for the 2026 World Cup in Mexico?

6.1 Where to buy tickets

Tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be available exclusively on the official FIFA website.

We recommend that you create a FIFA account now and sign up for alerts to be informed when sales start.

This will enable you to receive the opening dates and booking conditions directly.

2026 world cup tickets mexico

6.2 Sales phases

Ticketing will take place in several phases:

  • Random draw phase: you submit your request, then a random system determines who gets tickets.
  • “First come, first served” phase: you can buy the remaining tickets directly, without a draw.
  • Official resale platform: for those wishing to securely resell or repurchase tickets.

6.3 Estimated prices and categories

To date, exact prices have not been confirmed, but estimates indicate that tickets for group matches should vary between USD 150 and USD 300, depending on category.

Premium tickets, VIP boxes or hospitality packages are also available at higher prices, ranging from 3,500 USD to over 70,000 USD depending on the experience chosen.

6.4 Tips to maximize your chances

  • Create your FIFA account account and activate official notifications.
  • Log in as soon as sales open, as the most popular tickets will go fast.
  • Only buy on the official FIFA website to avoid scams.
  • Don’t forget the official resale platform if you missed the first sale.
  • If you’re coming in a group, look into allocations via national federations or group offers.

My advice
Book your accommodation as soon as your tickets are confirmed!

With high demand expected in all host cities, the best hotels are likely to be fully booked very quickly.

Here are the best links to find a hotel in the host cities:

7. Getting around Mexico during the World Cup

7.1 Getting around Mexico City

Getting to the Azteca stadium:

  • Metro + Tren Ligero: from downtown, take metro line 2 to Tasqueña, then the Tren Ligero to the Estadio Azteca stop. This is the cheapest and often the most reliable option on match days.
  • FIFA shuttles (to be confirmed): in previous editions, special shuttles linked neighborhoods such as Roma, Condesa or the center near the stadium.
  • Uber or cab: comfortable, but to be avoided at peak times. Depending on traffic, the journey can take from 45 minutes to over an hour.

Parking at the Azteca stadium:

Around 5,000 spaces are available, with VIP and disabled sections. Prices: 120 MXN for one car, 360 MXN for minibus, 480 MXN for bus.

The parking lot gates open approximately 4 hours before the match. We recommend arriving at least 2 hours before the kick-off.

7.2 Getting around Guadalajara

Getting to the Akron (Zapopan) stadium:

  • City buses: several lines run from downtown or Colonia Americana to the stadium. Journey time is around 25-30 minutes.
  • Macrobús + local bus: an efficient option if you’re on the fast Macrobús line. You’ll need to combine with a local bus.
  • Uber or cab: recommended if you’re staying in the historic center or Colonia Americana. Allow around 15 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

Parking at Akron Stadium:

The venue has over 5,000 outdoor spaces, as well as 780 covered spaces reserved for VIP boxes. Parking is often free for ticket holders, but crowds can be heavy at the exits.

bus guadalajara
public transportation in Guadalajara

7.3 Getting around Monterrey

Getting to the BBVA stadium (Guadalupe):

  • Metrorrey line 1: get off at Lerdo de Tejada station, about 10 minutes’ walk from the stadium.
  • City buses: lines 214, 223, TME and 093 serve the area.
  • Uber or cab: handy, but beware: Monterrey is often congested on match days, especially around the stadium.

Parking at the BBVA stadium:

The capacity it is set around 3,500 vehicles, with a reserved area for season ticket holders. Alternative parking lots are available nearby, however it’s advisable to arrive early to find a space.

My advice
During the World Cup, traffic around the stadiums is likely to be severely disrupted, especially in Mexico City and Monterrey.

If you use a car, try to arrive at least 2-3 hours in advance. To exit the place can take considerable time after the match ends.

If you use Uber, expect fares to rise due to high demand. In any case, the metro or city buses remain the most convenient and reliable options.

10. Is it safe to travel to Mexico for the World Cup?

It’s a question many people ask: is it safe to travel to Mexico during the FIFA 2026 World Cup? The answer is yes, as long as you take a few simple precautions and inform yourself.

Host cities are very well prepared

The three Mexican cities hosting the competition – Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey – are used to hosting international events.

They have modern infrastructures, a good transport network and a police presence in tourist areas.

Recommended neighborhoods

In Mexico City, choose Roma, Condesa, Juárez or Coyoacán.

In Guadalajara, opt for Colonia Americana or the historic center.

In Monterrey, San Pedro Garza García or downtown are good options.

These areas are lively, well served and safe for visitors.

Transportation and safety tips

Preferably use apps like Uber or Didi, or authorized cabs booked from hotels or airports. I always advise against taking a cab directly from the street.

Avoid walking alone late at night in isolated areas, as you would in any big city.

There will be a lot of people around during the World Cup. So it’s important to keep your belongings safe: carry your backpack in front of you in crowded places, watch your pockets, and keep your valuables close to you.

These are exactly the same tips I follow myself when traveling to Rome, Barcelona or other very touristy destinations!

My advice
