To help you make the most out of your visit, I’ve put together this comprehensive guide of the top 30 things to do in San Miguel de Allende.

I’ve also included tips on how to get there, where to stay, with my best tips and personal recommendations to ensure you have the best experience.

So, what are the best places to visit in San Miguel de Allende? Where to stay?

Let’s find out!

1. Visit the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel

The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel is a striking pink church with a neo-Gothic style that towers over the cityscape of San Miguel de Allende.

It dates back to the 17th century, but its distinctive facade was added in the late 19th century by a local craftsman who was inspired by the cathedral of Cologne, in Germany. The inside is just as stunning, with elaborate altars, paintings, and statues.

You can enter the church for free, but be respectful of the religious services and dress appropriately.

The church is located on the main plaza of the city, Jardín Allende.

You can relax on one of the metal benches and take in the sights of the colorful architecture and the well-kept gardens.

You can also explore the shops and galleries that line the plaza, or sample some of the delicious food from the street vendors. El Jardín is also the venue for many cultural events and celebrations throughout the year, such as parades, concerts, fireworks, and religious processions.

4. Casa del Mayorazgo de la Canal

The former home of the Canal family is now a cultural center of the Banamex bank that offers free temporal exhibitions to the public.

  • Open from 10am to 6 pm from Tuesday to Sunday

My Advice
In the historic center of Mexico City, you can find another Casa de Cultura Banamex: the Palacio Iturbide in a stunning building, with free exhibitions.

It’s one of my favorite spots to check out when I’m close by, and most tourists don’t know you can go inside

5. Cultural Center “El Nigromante”

The Centro Cultural El Nigromante is a cultural center that belongs to the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA).

It is located in a historic building that was built in 1755 as a convent for the nuns of the Conception. Later, it became a school of fine arts that attracted many famous artists, such as David Alfaro Siqueiros, Eleanor Cohen, and Pedro Martínez.

You can visit the center and admire the murals that adorn its walls, such as “The Fanaticism of the People” by Pedro Martínez, “The Washers” by Eleanor Cohen, and “The Life and Work of General Ignacio de Allende” by David Alfaro Siqueiros.

You can browse the art galleries that showcase temporary exhibitions of local and national artists or take a workshop in different disciplines, such as painting, sculpture, photography, music, dance, and theater.

You can also learn how to make some of these dishes yourself by taking a cooking class with a professional chef or a local family. If you prefer drinks over food, you can also join a wine tasting session that will introduce you to some of the best wines produced in the region.

San Miguel de Allende is a dream destination for wine lovers, with its amazing wineries and vineyards like Viñedo San Miguel, Vinícola Toyán and Viñedo Bernat.

A bit farther you can also visit San Lucas, Dos Buhos, Cuna de Tierra (one of my personal favorite!), Santísima Trinidad, Octagono, Viñedo San Miguel, Vinícola Toyán and Viñedo Bernat.

9. Adventure in the open

San Miguel de Allende is not only a cultural hub, but also a natural paradise, where you can enjoy the beauty and diversity of the Mexican countryside.

Horseback riding in San Miguel de Allende is a must-do activity, and there are several excellent locations to choose from.

  • One popular option is the Rancho Xotolar, where you can experience an authentic Mexican ranch lifestyle and ride through the countryside.
  • Another great choice is Coyote Canyon Adventures, which offers guided rides through the scenic canyon, as well as the chance to visit a traditional Mexican village

My Advice
If you’re looking for an incredible horseback riding experience in San Miguel de Allende, I highly recommend Coyote Canyon Adventures. I had the opportunity to ride with them during my visit, and I absolutely loved it!

They offer guided tours through the Coyote Canyon (click here to book!) which really looks like a movie set. The horses were well-cared for, and the guides made sure everyone had a safe ride, no matter how skilled they were. I had a lot of fun!

10. Hot Air Ballooning Over San Miguel de Allende

Imagine floating above the colorful cityscape of San Miguel de Allende as the sun peeks over the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink.

As you rise above the city early in the morning, you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the urban landscape and the fields of the countryside.

My Advice

10. Hiking in the Canyon

I had a wonderful time hiking in the canyon near San Miguel.

We were a small group of hikers led by ranch guides who showed us different cattle ranches along the main canyon of the region.

The ranches offered stunning views of meadows, canyons and rivers. We crossed the river at the bottom of the canyon, rested to cool off, and then climbed the impressive cliffs.

The best part was the delicious traditional homemade meal that awaited us at the end: fresh cheese and organic beans from the ranch, quesadillas, nopales, rice, fresh sauces, guacamole🤤

My Advice
If you prefer to go hiking by yourself, I would suggest to join this facebook group: San Miguel hiking Community

There are several trails you can look into:

  • The Rio Laja Trail is a 32.43-mile (51.9-kilometer) trail for walking and biking along the Rio Laja. It goes from the Presa Ignacio Allende to near Dolores Hidalgo. There are 12 sections of river trail (easy to intermediate) and each section is 2 mi to 3 mi (3.2 – 4.8 km).
  • The easy hike from Rio Blanco to Presa Allende 3.94 mi (6.34 km)

30. Take the Mezcal Route

Mezcal, a distilled alcoholic beverage made from any type of agave, is deeply rooted in Mexican culture and tradition.

Its unique smoky flavor sets it apart from tequila and is becoming increasingly popular worldwide.

Guanajuato Mezcal
I’m a huge fan of mezcal and I’ve enjoyed it a lot in Oaxaca, where most of it is made in Mexico.

But other states like Guanajuato also produce amazing mezcals. Did you know that Guanajuato was the first place to make mezcal in the 18th century

If you have an appreciation for fine spirits, then embarking on the Ruta del Mezcal should be high on your list of things to do in San Miguel de Allende.

It will take you on a journey through the region’s traditional distilleries, locally known as ‘palenques’.

Here, the agave ‘piñas’ are roasted in pit ovens, fermented, and then distilled in clay pots. This traditional process gives mezcal its distinctive smoky flavor.

You will get to taste a wide variety of mezcals and if you find a mezcal that you particularly enjoy, please consider buying a bottle (or 2, or 3, or 4!) to take home: it’s the best way support the local agave farmers and mezcal producers. ❤️

How to find a cheap flight to San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende does not have an airport, but you can find 3 airports nearby:

  • The nearest is the one in Queretaro (QRO), about 1h away.
  • Aeropuerto Del Bajio, Leon / Guanajuato (BJX), 1h15 away.
  • Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX), the Mexico City Airport, 3h30 away. – It’s the furthest one, but it’s my favorite option because it has the most flights and it’s the largest airport!

To find a cheap flight to any of those airports as well as the best domestic flights in Mexico, I recommend using our flight comparison tool in partnership with Skyscanner. It is guaranteed to get you the best price!
