Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca: Things to Do, Best Beaches & Travel Tips

Visiting Puerto Escondido means discovering one of the most iconic destinations on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, famous for its wild beaches, legendary surf spots, and relaxed atmosphere—very different from the large resort destinations of the Mexican Caribbean.

Located between Mazunte and Huatulco, Puerto Escondido attracts both surfers and travelers looking for nature, local life, and freedom along one of Mexico’s most beautiful coastlines.

People come here for its spectacular beaches, powerful waves, lagoons surrounded by mangroves, and boat excursions on the Pacific, but also for its slower pace of life and authentic atmosphere.

In this complete guide, I explain what to do in Puerto Escondido, when to go, how to get there, and how long to stay to make the most of your trip.

I also share practical travel tips, accommodation recommendations for every budget, and itinerary ideas in Puerto Escondido for 3 days, 7 days, or longer.

So, what should you do in Puerto Escondido, when is the best time to visit, and how can you organize your stay?

Sommaire

1. Why visit Puerto Escondido on the coast of Oaxaca?

Located on the Pacific coast of the state of Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido is a unique destination in Mexico. Far from the large hotel complexes of Cancún, it has retained an authenticity and bohemian atmosphere that appeals to travelers in search of nature, surfing, and simplicity.

The city stretches along several beaches with very different characteristics: some are perfect for experienced surfers, others for quiet swimming and relaxation. It is this diversity that makes Puerto Escondido so charming—you can spend your days lazing around, exploring the lagoons and wild coves, or immersing yourself in local life.

Puerto Escondido attracts a mix of travelers: surfers from around the world, Mexican families on vacation, backpackers, digital nomads, and expats looking for a slice of unspoiled paradise. The atmosphere is relaxed, warm, and friendly.

It is also an excellent gateway to discover the coast of Oaxaca, one of the most beautiful in Mexico: golden beaches, cliffs, tropical jungles, and coastal villages such as Mazunte, Zipolite, and San Agustinillo, all just a few miles away.

Finally, Puerto Escondido remains an affordable destination, even in high season, with a wide range of accommodation options—from small bungalows right on the sand to designer villas with ocean views.

2. Where is Puerto Escondido and how do you get there?

Puerto Escondido is located on the Pacific coast of the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico.
The city is nestled between the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains and the Pacific Ocean, about 160 miles from the city of Oaxaca and 68 miles west of Huatulco. Its location between the sea and the mountains explains its unspoiled charm and varied landscapes.

2.1 Getting to Puerto Escondido by plane: the fastest option

The easiest way to reach Puerto Escondido is by plane. The local airport (PXM – Puerto Escondido International Airport) has several daily flights from Mexico City, Oaxaca City, and Monterrey.

  • From Mexico City, the flight takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  • From Oaxaca City, there are short direct flights of around 30 minutes, operated by local airlines such as Aerotucán or Aerovega (a private airline offering a unique experience in small aircraft).

The airport is located just 5 to 10 minutes from the city center, and official taxis and private transfers are available at the terminal exit.

To find a cheap flight to Puerto Escondido as well as the best domestic flights in Mexico,I recommend using our flight comparison tool in partnership with Skyscanner. It guarantees you’ll pay the best price!

2.2 Getting to Puerto Escondido via the new highway (from Oaxaca or Mexico City)

Since February 2024, the opening of the new Barranca Larga – Ventanilla highway has revolutionized access to the Pacific coast.

This 65 miles expressway, officially inaugurated by the Mexican government (official source), directly connects Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido in about 3 hours, compared to 6 to 8 hours previously.

It is a toll highway, but the rates are moderate (approximately MXN 250 to 300 for a private car).

2.3 The old mountain road: longer, but spectacular

The old road, via Sola de Vega, remains open and is still used by travelers who want to enjoy the mountain scenery or avoid the toll. It winds through the heart of the Sierra Madre del Sur for about 160 miles, taking 6 to 8 hours depending on conditions.

This road offers a more authentic experience, with impressive views of forests and valleys. It passes through several picturesque villages where you can take a break or grab a bite to eat, particularly around Sola de Vega, known for its artisanal mezcals.

It is free (no tolls), but has many curves and can be tiring for those who are prone to motion sickness. It is advisable to leave early in the morning and drive only during daylight hours, as some sections are poorly lit at night.

Itinerary Tip: Stop in San José del Pacifico
If you have a little more time, I highly recommend stopping in San José del Pacífico.

This small mountain village in the state of Oaxaca, perched at an altitude of over 8,200 ft. in the Sierra Madre del Sur, is known for its views above the clouds, its cool climate, and its very calm atmosphere.

Please note, however, that San José del Pacífico is not located on the Oaxaca–Puerto Escondido road via Sola de Vega, but on the old Oaxaca–Pochutla mountain road (Federal Highway 175).

The road is very winding, with lots of curves and steep gradients, which can be tiring if you are not used to driving in the mountains. I recommend driving only during the day and checking the road conditions carefully, especially during the rainy season.

People come here mainly for the wooden cabins with views of the clouds, the pine forests, the hiking trails, the temazcals, and the ideal atmosphere for slow travel in Mexico!

2.4 Bus, rental car, and long-distance travel

The Mexican companies ADO, OCC (Omnibus Cristóbal Colón), and Altamar offer several daily trips between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido.

Thanks to the new highway, some direct routes now take 4 to 5 hours, but routes through the mountains take 6 to 8 hours.

You can purchase tickets directly on the official ADO website.

The buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, and sometimes offer night service to arrive on the coast in the early morning.

My advice
For more freedom, renting a car in Oaxaca or Puerto Escondido is still an excellent option.

The main roads are in good condition, but some isolated beaches require an SUV or a high-clearance car.

From Puerto Escondido Airport, you can rent a car from major international agencies such as Europcar, Hertz, or MEX Rent-A-Car.

To easily compare prices, conditions, and insurance, I recommend using Booking.com Cars, which allows you to book in advance and avoid unpleasant surprises when you arrive:

  • The site provides a clear comparison of the different prices offered by the agencies: a quick and easy way to find the best rate!
  • Cancellation is often offered free of charge: very convenient if you change your mind.
  • Booking Cars offers comprehensive insurance at a lower price than rental companies: an instant, effortless saving.

3. When to go to Puerto Escondido? Climate, seasons, and surfing

Puerto Escondido has a typically tropical climate, with an average annual temperature of around 82°F and plenty of sunshine most of the year.

The city has two main seasons: a dry season and a rainy season, which directly influence swimming and surfing conditions and tourist numbers.

3.1 Dry season (November to May): the ideal time to travel

From November to May, Puerto Escondido enjoys hot, dry, and sunny weather. Temperatures range from 80 to 89°C during the day, with very little rain.

This is the most comfortable time for most travelers, ideal for enjoying the beaches, exploring the lagoons, and going on sea excursions.

The months of December to March are considered the high tourist season, with a lively atmosphere and many local events. Accommodation prices are slightly higher, but the atmosphere remains friendly and pleasant.

3.2 Rainy season (June to October): nature, fewer people, and surfing

Between June and October, tropical rains mainly occur in the late afternoon or at night, often leaving beautiful sunny mornings.

The landscape becomes greener and more lush, the vegetation explodes, and tourist numbers drop. This is an interesting time for those looking for a more local and less touristy atmosphere.

As for surfing, the Pacific swells are more powerful at this time of year, especially on the famous Playa Zicatela. On the other hand, some quieter beaches such as Carrizalillo or La Punta remain accessible for swimmers and beginner surfers.

3.3 Best time to surf in Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido is often referred to as the surfing capital of Mexico and is one of the best spots in the world. Conditions vary greatly depending on the season, tide, and swell:

  • May to October: season of big swells from the South Pacific. Waves can reach 4 to 32 ft. at Playa Zicatela, offering impressive tubes reserved for professional surfers. This period coincides with the International Tournament in Zicatela, an international competition that attracts the best riders on the planet.
  • November to April: a calmer period, with medium waves (3 to 6 ft.) perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers. The beaches of La Punta and Carrizalillo are ideal for surf schools and learning sessions.

Conditions are generally better in the morning, when the wind is light and the sea is calmer. Many local schools offer private or small group lessons, with all equipment included and certified instructors. The water temperature ranges from 80 to 84°F all year round, so there is no need for a wetsuit.

Puerto Escondido, world-class surf spot
Zicatela Beach is one of the most powerful surf spots in the world, often compared to Pipeline (Hawaii). It is a legendary place, known for its massive tubular waves and international surfing community.

However, these conditions can be extremely dangerous for swimmers or beginner surfers: the currents are strong and the waves break close to the shore.

If you just want to swim or learn to surf in complete safety, choose small sheltered coves such as Playa Carrizalillo, Playa Manzanillo, or La Punta. These beaches offer calmer seas, a friendly atmosphere, and schools suitable for all levels.

It is strongly recommended that you follow the lifeguards’ instructions (safety flags) and avoid Zicatela outside the supervised areas if you have no previous experience surfing big waves.

3.4 Crowds, events, and times to avoid

December to February and July to August are the busiest months in Puerto Escondido, especially for Mexican travelers. For a quieter atmosphere, the mid-seasons— May-June or September-October —offer an excellent match between pleasant weather, more affordable prices, and tranquility.

Please note: the rainy season in Puerto Escondido can occasionally cause slippery roads or temporary power outages, especially in rural areas. It is therefore advisable to have a headlamp, an external battery, and to book accommodation with good infrastructure or a generator.

For surfing enthusiasts in Puerto Escondido, late summer and fall are key periods. The Pacific waves become more powerful and attract surfers and spectators from all over the world, especially during the major competitions held each year on the legendary Playa Zicatela. This period also marks the return of more stable weather after the rainy season, which explains the increase in visitors as November approaches.

Puerto Escondido and its events
Puerto Escondido is one of the most famous surfing spots in the world, largely thanks to the powerful waves at Playa Zicatela, often referred to as the “Mexican Pipeline.”

Several international surfing competitions are held there each year, including the famous Zicatela Mexican Pro and El Rey de Zicatela PRO, which usually take place between late summer and fall, when the swell from the South Pacific is at its most consistent and spectacular.

November is a key period for the city with the Fiestas de Noviembre, a drier time after the rainy season, punctuated by cultural, sporting, and festive events that attract more visitors.

4. What to do in Puerto Escondido? Beaches, surfing, and nature

Puerto Escondido is a complete destination that combines spectacular beaches, wild nature, and local culture. Whether you’re a fan of relaxation, a surfing enthusiast, or curious about nature excursions, the city offers a variety of activities for all tastes and travel styles.

4.1 Playa Zicatela: Mexico’s legendary surf spot

The famous Playa Zicatela is the heart of Puerto Escondido.

Nicknamed the “Mexican Pipeline, it is one of the best surf spots in the world thanks to its powerful and perfectly formed waves. Between May and October, the swell from the South Pacific generates spectacular waves, sometimes exceeding 20 feet.

This is where the international surfing competition “Zicatela Mexican Pro” is held, attracting the best professional surfers in November during the month’s festivities.

For visitors who don’t surf, it’s a fascinating place to watch the sessions from the beach or the seafront cafes. The atmosphere is young, lively and cosmopolitan, punctuated by sunrises and sunsets over the ocean.

4.2 Playa Carrizalillo: the most beautiful beach for swimming

Nestled in a cove accessible by a staircase of about 160 steps, Playa Carrizalillo is a small paradise for swimming and families. Its calm, protected turquoise waters make it the perfect place to learn to surf or snorkel among tropical fish.

The small beach huts serve grilled fish and fresh juices in a peaceful atmosphere. It is an ideal beach for relaxing away from the hustle and bustle of Zicatela.

4.3 Puerto Escondido Main Beach & Playa Angelito: local atmosphere and relaxation

Located in the center of Puerto Escondido, Playa Principal and Playa Angelito reflect the authentic face of the Oaxaca coast. Here you will see local fishermen bringing in their catch at dawn, Mexican families enjoying the sea, and children playing in the shallow waves.

These beaches are perfect for observing local life, having lunch in a typical restaurant, or embarking on a boat trip to see dolphins and turtles. The atmosphere is more peaceful, especially during the week.

4.4 Nature excursions around Puerto Escondido (lagoons, dolphins, turtles)

  • Manialtepec Lagoon: 20 minutes from Puerto Escondido, this lagoon is famous for its nocturnal bioluminescence phenomenon. On moonless nights, the water lights up with your body movements, creating a magical spectacle.
  • Sea turtle release: take part in the release of baby turtles on the surrounding beaches (Bacocho, Palmarito)
  • Boat trip to watch dolphins: dolphins, turtles, rays, and sometimes whales depending on the season (December to March).
  • Exploring hidden beaches: excursions take you to secluded coves between Puerto Escondido and Mazunte, perfect for coastal hiking or snorkeling.
  • Horseback riding at sunset: ride through farmland and across the river before arriving at the beach
  • Eco-tour on the coast: Observe the amazing wildlife of the Oaxaca coast lagoon in its natural habitat. Visit Zipolite Beach and enjoy a fresh seafood brunch at Escatahuite Beach.
  • Mexican cooking class: Learn how to prepare authentic Mexican meals with a local host.

Did you know?
Mexico is home to six of the seven species of sea turtles in the world, and the Oaxaca coast (between Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, and Escobilla) is one of their most important sanctuaries.

The main species observed are Lepidochelys olivacea (olive ridley sea turtle) and Chelonia mydas (green sea turtle).

The nesting season generally runs from June to December, with peaks between August and November. During this period, thousands of turtles come to lay their eggs on the region’s beaches, particularly at Playa Escobilla and Playa La Ventanilla.

Travelers can participate in baby turtle release programs, supervised by local associations, while respecting the guidelines: do not handle adult turtles, avoid camera flashes, and do not walk on nesting areas.

For an ethical and educational experience, visit the Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga in Mazunte, a research and education center open to the public, dedicated to the protection of Pacific sea turtles.

5. How long should you stay in Puerto Escondido? Suggested itineraries

The ideal length of stay in Puerto Escondido depends on your pace: a long weekend allows you to get a taste of the atmosphere and the surfing, while a week allows you to really relax, practice yoga, take surfing lessons, and explore the coast.

Here are my recommended itineraries for visiting Puerto Escondido, from a short stay from Mexico City (CDMX) to longer combinations with Puebla and the city of Oaxaca.

  • Remember to book surf lessons, lagoon trips, and transfers in advance during high season (December-March, July-August).
  • Pack appropriately: light clothing for the coast, a few layers for Oaxaca (cooler at night), sunscreen, walking shoes, and flip-flops for the beach.

6. Where to stay in Puerto Escondido? Neighborhoods and tips

Puerto Escondido offers accommodation for all budgets, from affordable hostels to luxury hotels.

The choice of neighborhood depends mainly on your travel style: if you prefer surfing, yoga, and a lively atmosphere, La Punta/Zicatela is clearly the best option.

On the other hand, for a more local immersion, more peace and quiet, proximity to markets, and easier access to buses and taxis, the center of Puerto Escondido (el pueblo) is more suitable.

During high season, I strongly recommend booking your accommodation well in advance, especially in the most popular neighborhoods!

6.1 Staying in La Punta or Zicatela: surf and bohemian atmosphere

La Punta is ideal for travelers looking for a bohemian, quiet, and community atmosphere: sandy streets, cafes, small surf schools, numerous yoga classes, and a laid-back nightlife (bars and local parties rather than big clubs).

Staying in La Punta generally means: easy access to “chill” surf spots, a safe atmosphere for evening strolls, more options for wellness retreats, and waking up to the ocean without the hustle and bustle of Zicatela (the party district of Puerto Escondido).

Where to stay in La Punta Zicatela

  • Casa Fruta y Verdura: a small boutique hotel with an outdoor pool, common room, terrace, restaurant, shared kitchen, and barbecue. An excellent choice for a comfortable and friendly stay – From $230 per night.

  • Casa Joseph Zicatela – Adults Only: luxury beachfront hotel with restaurant, concierge service, sea views, and perfect location. Ideal for an exclusive and relaxing stay – From 1,540$  per night

6.2 Staying in the center (pueblo): convenient and more local

The pueblo (downtown area around Playa Principal) offers a more immersive cultural experience: local markets, traditional restaurants, better public transportation connections, often more affordable prices, and easy access to services (banks, pharmacies, buses). This is the practical choice for families, travelers who want to combine sightseeing and beach time, or those who prefer to be at the heart of everyday Mexican life.

7. Local life, food, and atmosphere in Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido is more than just beaches: it’s a lively, diverse city that blends surfing culture, local traditions, and a bohemian vibe. People come here to reconnect with nature and experience authentic Mexican life.

Depending on the neighborhood you stay in, the experience is very different: La Punta appeals to travelers seeking peace and quiet and community life, while the pueblo (downtown) remains the beating heart of the city, more local and lively.

7.1 Local life, culture, and pace of life

In La Punta, the atmosphere is decidedly bohemian. You’ll meet surfers, yogis, artists, and digital nomads who have come to settle down for a few weeks or months.

The pace is slow, with days spent surfing at sunrise, taking yoga classes facing the ocean, and watching sunsets over the cliffs.

The neighborhood is full of small surf schools, yoga centers (such as Vida Yoga Center and Yoga One Love), and cafes with healthy menus featuring smoothie bowls, fresh juices, local coffee, and vegetarian options.

La Punta is also a place to meet people: craft markets, small live music concerts, and laid-back evenings in open-air bars create a friendly atmosphere without excess.

In the pueblo, life is more Mexican, more rooted in the local culture. Here you can discover the true identity of Oaxaca: colorful markets, the smell of spices, crafts, small family restaurants, and sincere smiles.

The Benito Juárez market, right in the center, is a must-visit to sample local specialties (tlayudas, tamales, tropical fruits, Oaxacan coffee).

In the evening, the waterfront promenade comes alive: families, street vendors, musicians, and tourists mingle in a warm atmosphere.

It is also from the pueblo that you can easily reach the other beaches in the region or organize excursions to the lagoons and coastal villages.

7.5 Going out in Puerto Escondido: bars, music, and parties

Puerto Escondido is a fairly quiet destination, but the nightlife regularly comes alive, especially at certain times of the year.

In Autumn, the Fiestas de Noviembre bring the city to life with events celebrating local culture, music, and surfing. In spring and summer, several electronic and alternative music festivals take place on the coast, often in temporary venues around La Punta. Nearby, the Mazunte Jazz Festival, usually held in late November, attracts musicians and world music lovers every year.

On a daily basis, nightlife is mainly concentrated between La Punta and Zicatela. Many start the evening in La Punta, with their feet in the sand, enjoying a drink at sunset, then head to Zicatela for a more dance-oriented atmosphere. The journey between the two areas takes about ten minutes by taxi.

La Punta often has a more relaxed atmosphere, with acoustic concerts, chill DJ sets, and sunset parties. Zicatela is home to the liveliest venues, with open-air clubs and bars, including:

  • Cañabrava — tropical atmosphere, open-air dance floor, and regular DJ sets.
  • El Cactus — bar-restaurant with a rooftop and a friendly atmosphere.
  • Xcaanda — beachfront club known for its electro and Latin parties.

If you want to experience the local nightlife without having to worry about organizing anything, there is also a bar crawl in Puerto Escondido: guides take you to several popular venues for a festive evening, perfect for meeting other travelers.

8. Practical tips for a successful stay in Puerto Escondido

8.1 Safety in Puerto Escondido: what you need to know

Puerto Escondido is considered one of Mexico’s safest beach destinations.

The tourist areas— Zicatela, La Punta, Rinconada, and the city center (El Pueblo) —are safe, even at night, as long as you stay in the busy areas. Incidents are rare, but it is recommended that you adopt a few common-sense precautions:

  • Avoid swimming at beaches with strong waves (especially Zicatela) if you are not used to it.
  • Do not swim at night.
  • Do not walk alone late at night in isolated or unlit areas.
  • Always keep an eye on your personal belongings in bars and on the beach.
  • Use official taxis for nighttime travel.

The general atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. The locals are hospitable, and the city retains a peaceful atmosphere, even during the high tourist season.

8.2 Getting around Puerto Escondido (collectivos, taxis, scooters)

Getting around Puerto Escondido is easy and affordable. The city stretches for about 6 miles between La Punta, Zicatela, and the city center, making it useful to use local transportation:

  • Regular or shared taxis: available everywhere, between 40 and 100 pesos depending on the distance. Don’t forget to agree on the fare before departure and keep cash on hand for payment.
  • Colectivos: small shared vans or pick-ups, very cheap (10 to 20 pesos per trip), a great option for visiting neighboring villages.
  • Scooter rental: ideal for freely visiting beaches or lagoons. Several agencies in Zicatela and La Punta offer daily or weekly rentals.
  • Car rental: useful for exploring the Oaxaca coast (Mazunte, Zipolite, Huatulco). Roads are generally good thanks to the new highway, but parking is limited in La Punta.
  • Bicycles: possible on certain parts (Rinconada, downtown), but the heat and terrain make this mode of transportation impractical for a full day.

8.3 Budget in Puerto Escondido: cost of living and expenses

Puerto Escondido remains affordable compared to resorts on the Caribbean coast, but prices increase during Mexican holidays and the high season (December to April). Here is an average estimate depending on your travel style:

  • Low budget: around 39$ to 67$ per day — hostel accommodation, street food, public transportation.
  • Medium comfort: around 84$ to 169$ usd per day — standard hotel, beach restaurants, some activities.
  • Upper comfort: around 197$ to 393$ per day — hotel with swimming pool, spa, car rental, private tours.

Payment & money in Puerto Escondido
I suggest you use cash (Mexican pesos), as many shops, taxis, and markets in Puerto Escondido do not accept credit cards, and when they do, commission fees are applied, usually between 3% and 5% via the payment terminal.

The ATMs of the major banks are mainly located in the city center on the El Pueblo side. It is therefore advisable to withdraw enough cash in advance, especially if you are staying in Zicatela or La Punta.

8.4 Health, heat, mosquitoes, and internet connection

  • Climate: hot and humid almost all year round, with an average temperature of 82–96°F. Rainy season from June to October. Bring biodegradable sunscreen, a hat, and stay hydrated.
  • Health: no vaccinations are required, but insurance covering surfing and water sports may be recommended if you plan to do a lot of them. Tap water is not drinkable; opt for filtered or bottled water.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi available in most accommodations and cafes. Reliable 4G network (Telcel, AT&T) in tourist areas, weaker on isolated beaches or during rainy periods.
  • Services: Pharmacies, supermarkets, and clinics are available in the city center.

8.5 Traveling responsibly in Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido is attracting more and more visitors and remains a destination with a fragile balance. To preserve its landscapes and authenticity:

  • Do not leave any trash on the beaches; take it with you (I always bring a small plastic bag!)
  • Use ocean-friendly sunscreen
  • Avoid unguided tours to see turtles or bioluminescence.
  • Choose eco-friendly accommodations and support local businesses.
  • Respect the tranquility of the inhabitants and marine wildlife.

Traveling consciously helps preserve Puerto Escondido’s unique charm and free spirit, while contributing to the protection of the Oaxacan coast.

9. Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, or Huatulco: which destination to choose?

The Pacific coast of the state of Oaxaca is home to several seaside gems that appeal to different audiences. While Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, and Huatulco share the same coastline, their atmosphere, infrastructure, and pace of life contrast sharply.

Here is a detailed comparison to help you choose (or combine) these three destinations.

9.1 Puerto Escondido: surfing, freedom, and local atmosphere

Puerto Escondido remains the beating heart of the Oaxaca coast. It is a perfect blend of energy and authenticity.

Surfers come from all over the world to tackle the legendary waves of Zicatela, while travelers seeking relaxation prefer quieter coves such as Carrizalillo or Playa Coral. The food scene is varied, accommodation suits all budgets, and the nightlife remains lively all year round.

It’s a destination that’s both festive and laid-back, with a good balance between modern comforts and local Mexican atmosphere.

  • Pros: diverse beaches, legendary surf spots, lively atmosphere, numerous cafes and restaurants, easy access from Oaxaca City.
  • Ideal for: surfers, digital nomads, couples, active travelers.

9.2 Mazunte: nature, spirituality, and slow travel

About an hour east of Puerto Escondido, Mazunte is a small coastal village that has become a symbol of sustainable tourism in Mexico.

It is a haven for travelers seeking peace and quiet, yoga, and spiritual retreats. The atmosphere is bohemian and peaceful, with beaches within walking distance, bamboo huts, and vegetarian or vegan restaurants.

The bay is beautiful, the sunsets are spectacular, especially from Punta Cometa, and the absence of large hotel complexes reinforces the feeling of being out of time. Everything closes early in Mazunte; evenings are for rest.

If you want to party, head to Puerto Escondido or Huatulco.

  • Advantages: Zen and eco-friendly atmosphere, yoga retreats, turtle and dolphin watching, very good value for money.
  • Ideal for: nature lovers, solo travelers, couples seeking serenity, wellness retreats.

9.3 Huatulco: developed beaches and comfort

Huatulco, further east (about 2.5 hours from Puerto Escondido via the coastal road), offers a very different experience.

It is a planned beach resort with modern infrastructure, all-inclusive resorts, an international airport, and nine beautiful protected bays.

The environment is more structured and secure, perfect for families or those seeking comfort without sacrificing the beauty of the beaches.

  • Advantages: comfortable hotels, quiet and clean beaches, good level of services, secure environment, local atmosphere, and far from the tourism of Puerto Escondido.
  • Ideal for: families, discerning travelers, relaxing couples’ getaways.

9.4 Can Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, and Huatulco be combined?

Thanks to the new Oaxaca–Puerto Escondido highway, it is now very easy to include the Pacific coast in a complete itinerary.

Here are some ideas for tours depending on the length of your stay:

  • Long weekend from Mexico City (4 days): direct flight to Puerto Escondido, relaxation between La Punta and Carrizalillo, day trip to discover Mazunte and its sunset at Punta Cometa.
  • 1 week: 3 days in Oaxaca to discover Zapotec culture and 4 days in Puerto Escondido/Mazunte for surfing and beach time.
  • 10 to 12 days: Oaxaca City (2–3 days) – Puerto Escondido (4 days) – Mazunte (2 days) – Huatulco (2–3 days) before heading back.

My advice
If you like surfing, partying, and friendly atmospheres, start with Puerto Escondido.

If you’re looking for spiritual immersion and a slower pace, end your stay in Mazunte.

And for total comfort with quiet, local beaches, finish in Huatulco. These three destinations complement each other perfectly for a complete experience of Oaxaca’s Pacific coast.

10. FAQ – Everything you need to know before traveling to Puerto Escondido

10.1 Is Puerto Escondido safe for travelers?

Yes, Puerto Escondido is considered a relatively safe destination, especially in tourist areas such as La Punta, Zicatela, or Rinconada.

As everywhere in Mexico, it is recommended to take basic precautions: avoid walking alone at night in isolated areas, keep your valuables safe, and use official taxis.

My advice

10.2 Can you swim anywhere?

No. The Pacific coast of Oaxaca is known for its strong currents and waves, especially at Zicatela.

For swimming, choose protected coves such as Carrizalillo, Playa Coral, or Playa Manzanillo. Safety flags on beaches must be strictly observed.

10.3 How much should I budget?

Puerto Escondido is accessible for all budgets: budget accommodations, very affordable local restaurants, but also boutique hotels and high-end gourmet spots.

Life there is generally less expensive than in Europe or the United States, but prices vary greatly depending on the season.

As a guide, expect to spend $40 to $80 per day on a small budget, $83 to $165 per day for mid-range comfort, and $190 usd or more per day for a high-end stay.

Prices rise significantly during the high season, particularly during Christmas and New Year (mid-December to early January), Semana Santa and Easter (March-April), as well as during the Mexican summer holidays (July-August) and certain events such as the Fiestas de Noviembre or major surfing competitions.

10.4 Should you rent a car?

It’s useful but not essential.

Taxis are plentiful and affordable, and most tourist areas are within walking distance. A car can be useful if you want to explore other more isolated beaches or visit Mazunte, Zipolite, or Huatulco on your own.

10.5 When is the best time to see turtles?

Oaxaca is a key region for sea turtles.

The main nesting season is between July and January, with peak viewing often between August and November. Guided night tours allow you to see the nesting, while baby turtle releases take place throughout the year depending on the beach.

10.6 How do I get to Mazunte or Huatulco from Puerto Escondido?

Both destinations are accessible via the coastal road. Allow about 1 hour and 15 minutes for Mazunte and 2 hours and 30 minutes for Huatulco. Shared taxis, vans, OCC buses, and private taxis provide daily service.

10.7 Are there mosquitoes?

Yes, especially during the wet season (May to October). Bring a good repellent, especially at sunrise and sunset, and check if your accommodation has mosquito nets if you are sensitive to bugs.

10.8 Can you work remotely from Puerto Escondido?

Yes. Several cafes offer very good internet connections (La Punta, Rinconada, Zicatela). Some hotels also have good coworking spaces. However, the network can be unstable during storms or the rainy season.

10.9 How does transportation work in the city?

Taxis are the simplest and cheapest option.

There are no meters: prices are fixed according to neighborhood. The main areas (La Punta, Zicatela, Rinconada) can be covered on foot (about a 30-minute walk) – Between La Punta and El Pueblo, it takes about an hour to walk, so it’s better to take a taxi (about 150 pesos).

10.10 Is Puerto Escondido suitable for families?

Yes, provided you choose beaches that are suitable for swimming, such as Carrizalillo or Manzanillo. The pace is relaxed, but the sea is often too rough for young children on Zicatela beach, for example. There are many family hotels, especially around Rinconada, offering direct access to swimming pools or beaches.

11. Why Puerto Escondido remains a must-see destination on the Mexican Pacific coast

Puerto Escondido is a destination that appeals for its diversity: beaches with very different atmospheres, world-famous surf spots, coves ideal for swimming, unspoiled nature, delicious local cuisine, and an atmosphere that remains authentic despite its growing popularity.

Whether you come to surf, relax, explore the Pacific coast, or combine your stay with a visit to the city of Oaxaca or Mazunte, Puerto Escondido offers a unique experience that is freer than many of Mexico’s seaside resorts.

Here, the slow pace, spectacular sunsets, markets, quiet cafes, and evenings that begin with your feet in the sand continue into the clubs of Zicatela.

If you only take one piece of advice away with you, it should be this: take your time. Puerto Escondido is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, between swims, a surfing session, a meal on the beach, or a trip to the neighboring villages. It is this gentleness and freedom that make it one of the most endearing places in Mexico.
